Harrison’s Manual of Medicine

Editors: Braunwald E, Fauci A, Kasper D, Hauser S, Longo D and Jameson J

No, this is not the famed and expansive huge textbook of medicine but its little brother. Obviously there is plenty of it’s heritage on show, with cross referencing to the larger volume. However this book will easily satisfy the average GP in terms of its coverage.

Basically it is a mini-volume textbook of medicine. But its big plus is its size, it is roughly the length of the BNF though it is a little fatter.

The amazing aspect of this book is that it is over 1000 pages in size and thanks to densely packed text packs a vast amount of data between its covers. This paperback can easily lie on a desk (I guess it is designed for a white coat pocket) and can lie alongside a BNF as an essential and rapid reference source. One disadvantage is that it is American based, though most of the information is applicable to UK practice.

If you want an authoritative desk bound manual that won’t hog space then this is a good port of call. It also represents excellent value for money.
