Stroke - Your Questions Answered
Authors: Dr Graeme and J Hankey
This is one of a number of books written in the same format and is aimed chiefly at the GP although hospital doctors involved in caring for stroke patients will find much in its 359 pages to interest them. The question and answer format ensures that it is much easier to read than a conventional textbook and the answers to a particular question can be rapidly located by simply browsing the contents at the front or the list of patient questions towards the end and accessing the relevant section. This is the beauty of the Q&A format - reading whole chapters is unnecessary.
Section 14 is probably the one of most relevance to primary care. This deals with the issue of secondary prevention and covers treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, lifestyle modification, antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulation and surgery. A useful summary of the secondary prevention advice for patients is situated at the end of the chapter.
For non-radiologists, the section dealing with imaging is especially good, being surprisingly easy to understand with some good quality CT and MRI scans and concise answers to such common questions as how to differentiate an ischaemic from a haemorrhagic stroke.
A list of useful support groups follows the last chapter, then all the references and a glossary of acronyms (stroke medicine has more than its fair share!) before the index. Key points and important information are highlighted throughout in boxes and many chapters end with FAQs from patients with answers they would find easy to understand. All in all, a practical and readable book which the primary care physician will find invaluable in dealing with stroke patients and their families.
