Obstetrics by Ten Teachers

Editors: S Campbell and C Lees

With the first edition published in 1917, it is no great surprise that this book is a well-known general review of obstetrics. It is a key undergraduate text and in fact I used this as basic reference source when I was a medical student. I can’t (or don't want to!) remember what edition I used but it certainly has come on leaps and bounds since then. The text is much more readable and easier to understand and there is the liberal use of colour. There are plenty of illustrations, tables and text boxes as well as case histories.

Though this is primarily an undergraduate book, it is ideal for use by community based midwifes and of course GPs. There are 374 pages and it is not that difficult to read the whole book and as result, obstetric knowledge can be quickly brought up to date. It is not a detailed reference book, you will need to look elsewhere for this but for refreshing knowledge or those who just simply want to keep up to date with the minimum of effort and fuss, then this is for them. It is great to see that a book with such a distinguished past is still evolving and not sitting on its laurels.
