Current Obstetric and Gynaecologic Diagnosis and Treatment

Editors: Alan H DeCherney and Lauren Nathan

This is a solid, compact volume, which can easily act as a single source of reference for most primary care physicians and their teams within the UK. It is part of the Lange series of books, well noted for their good value and quality, and this product is no exception. True, it is an American book and multi-author and is also aimed at the hospital specialist, so there is a lot of material that may be of less interest to GPs. Even so that does not detract from the value of the book, because it has to cater for so many potential audiences, this means that it provides a good broad general survey of the speciality.

The book is surprisingly small and when opened up, the complete size is only slightly larger than an A4 piece of paper. Despite that, there are 1163 pages within the book and the text is closely packed together, so it is a substantial volume. In fact it contains a huge amount of information. All the usual subjects are covered and there are some topics that don’t always get an airing in such books, for example there is a chapter on domestic violence and sexual assault. Yes, this could easily provide a UK based GP with almost everything they need to have as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology reference source. More importantly for many us, this also represents good value for money
