Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment 2004 - 43rd edition
Authors: Tierney L. McPhee S. Papadakis M.
This has been a fantastic series and, now in its 43rd edition, continues to remain fresh and relevant to modern medical practice. It is fantastic value for money with 1864 pages of superb reference material and unlike many general medical books does not just cover the standard medical topics. For example, there are excellent sections on dermatology, eye issues, ENT and gynaecology.
The book as a whole is well written and focused very much on a physician who needs to treat patients, and it is a practical rather than an academic book. Yes, it is American but I used it extensively as a reference source and did not find this to be a handicap from a UK perspective. Also as a textbook it is useful to both primary and secondary care practitioners and certainly as a UK based GP I found the subject matter highly relevant. It is an annual textbook but I don’t think you need to buy a new edition every year; however being annual means that the text is regularly reviewed and by the 43rd edition you would expect that everything has been checked many times over. Also it allows the book never to go out of date, but it must be a herculean task for the editors to keep this going every year.
Like all good books it has a web presence and in fact is represented twice. The website www.cmdtlinks.com contains selected links to the relevant web sites related to content in the book and www.cmdtonline.com which contains the text of the book plus more, but this requires an extra payment. However, I don’t think these are essential but a good bolt on. The book is excellent, well written, good value and covers a lot of territory.
