The 5-minute Paediatric Consult

Editor: M William Schwartz

The format of the 5-minute series is spreading far and wide and this is another excellent example from this collection. In effect this is a practical reference source for paediatrics, which is best used either just before or shortly after you have seen a patient with a specific problem. It provides the user with the knowledge to confidently handle a problem in front of them. Even better it can be used in both primary and secondary care.

You may have guessed that this book comes from the USA simply by looking at the title and indeed this is the case. The multi-contributor approach works well here and being a new edition means that data and information should be up to date.

The book is divided up into several sections starting with a review of symptoms, followed by diseases and there are also sections with lab values, tables and a medications section. The 5-minute format is a two-page layout offering the information in short note form under standard headings. So this helps to differentiate it from a standard textbook and makes it more like a top up information source, which can be dipped into for a quick update on a specific topic.

Without doubt this specific volume is excellent and despite the price tag, regular users will feel that this represents value for money. Another triumph for the 5-minute series.
