Bellevue Guide to Outpatient Medicine - An Evidence-based Guide to Primary Care
Chief Editors: Nate Link and Michael Tanner
Associate Chief Editors: Danielle Ofri and Lloyd Wasserman
This comprehensive primary care text arises out of teamwork between specialist and primary care physicians in the Department of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. Written in evidence based style yet eminently readable, most important primary care issues are covered. Those searching for deep philosophical argument, risk management, continuing professional development etc. had better look elsewhere - this is nuts and bolts medicine.
Each chapter is written succinctly and bullet points are in evidence throughout. The headings in bold type make navigation of the text a pleasure but what really sets this book apart is the fact that all references are side by side with the main text and not in a list at the end of the chapter.
The appendices too, are worth more than a brief look, in particular Appendix D from the CDC. Genital Chlamydia is now the number one notifiable disease in the US with a staggering 60,4420 cases in 1998.
Statistics were never my strong point but a good working knowledge of them has become increasingly important. To this end the Glossary is very helpful in defining and explaining many of the terms used throughout. A useful book to keep in your consulting room to dip into or to read at leisure.
