Ferri’s Clinical Advisor
Editor: Fred Ferri
This is an ideal reference manual for a GP and it is also suitable for their staff such as a practice nurse. It is a feature packed book and contains more than 1500 pages and yet it is not a true traditional style of textbook. Instead it deals with its diverse subject matter within five sections and this builds up to a superb manual of primary care.
Despite its US origins, British GPs will find this an amazingly useful book. The first section deals with about 600 conditions written in note format, short lists or bullet points containing the basic information. Whilst the second section groups together symptoms and signs. Section 3 is a collection of algorithms and flow charts and section 4 deals with a topic that often causes difficulties -interpretation of laboratory tests. The final section looks at preventative services. Needless to say the whole book is well indexed providing a superb manual of the clinical aspects of general practice.
This is a book designed to give practical help to a GP in the front line providing the right volume of information needed to deal with a patient’s problem. Now that is what you call useful.
