Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine

Editors: Braunwald E, Fauci A, Kasper D, Hauser S, Longo D and Jameson J

CD ROM version 1.0 (Windows)

There is no doubt that Harrison’s is a top-notch textbook of medicine that is detailed, comprehensive and highly respected. The book is large and takes up a big space on the bookshelf whilst the CD of course is much less bulky. Helpfully the CD is enclosed in a sturdy case similar to that, which holds a video. Without getting too much into the CD versus traditional book debate, there is no doubt that a CD version of a large textbook has definite advantages. In this case the search facilities are lightning fast and if desired, a highlighted selection of text can be selected and printed.

There are multimedia facilities such as a generous use of hypertext links and there is a selection of videos which can be useful. Also bundled is a US based therapeutics collection, which though interesting and informative has limited use for the UK practitioner.

The software which accesses the material is simple to use, intuitive and does not take much time at all to master and initially the CD is easy to install. Within minutes of taking the CD out of the box for the first time, the user will be well immersed in the vast volume of information contained here. In fact for a UK based GP who uses their computer regularly during the consultation process, it would be well used if left continuously in the CD tray.

An excellent showcase for an excellent textbook and though pricey (it also contains material not in the book), the person who will use it regularly will not be disappointed.
