Oxford Handbook of General Practice

Authors: C Simon, H Everitt, J Birtwistle and B Stevenson

In short, this is a truly outstanding book, which covers primary care as seen from the United Kingdom. In just over 1000 pages, written and produced in the well-established format of the Oxford Handbooks series, a breathtaking tour of general practice is provided. The handbooks are small and are meant to live on a desk-perhaps next to the BNF or carried in a medical bag, rather than in a bookcase. Despite the book’s portability it will provide the average GP and GP registrar with fantastic and up to date advice on how to manage most standard front line clinical problems.

The back cover of this book claims that it is "a truly comprehensive pocket reference for GPs" and without doubt this book lives up to that claim. There is little fat to the text, all the words are carefully chosen and basic facts, figures and practical information is given. Websites and contact details of organisations are in abundance. Much of the text is laid out in note form with few illustrations and this is a book for GPs by GPs and it is British.

Even better, the price is very competitive making it outstanding value for money. I suspect this will become a standard text for GP registrars and very popular amongst practising GPs. For a first edition, this is an outstanding offering and I am sure that there will be a long line of future editions.
