Practical General Practice - Guidelines for Effective Management (Fourth Edition)
Authors: Alex Khot and Andrew Polmear
Don’t be put off by the title; this is not a book of a collection of guidelines, which may put off a substantial number of readers. This is what the main title suggests, that it deals with practical general practice.
The authors, with the aid of a number of contributors, have examined guidelines as well as established databases such as Cochrane or well known and highly regarded publications. As a result, this provides the primary care physician with practical (hence the title), high quality advice on how to manage the patient in front of them. With a number of information sources consulted, this should be leading edge and evidence based advice. The content is very factual, often in note form and covers a wide range of topics which are common to general practice. Not all the material is purely clinical, though the vast majority is. For example, the first chapter is on general administrative matters such as sick notes, fitness to drive and welfare benefits.
Like most modern textbooks there is an accompanying website but this book has a welcome bonus, a CD ROM. This contains the contents of the book and the ability to print out materials and data quoted in the book. It is simplicity itself to install and use the CD, which works in a web browser. So the CD could lie in the CD tray of the clinical computer that the GP is using, whilst the book can remain on the bookshelf allowing access for the whole primary care team.
So despite the hefty price tag, this book which is just over 500 pages long, is an excellent and admirable contribution to quality care in general practice.
