The GP Registrar Survival Guide
Authors: W Abrams and S Howell
The GP Registrar Handbook provides help and advice for GP Registrars in their practice year. Whilst it would be difficult to produce a curriculum for General Practice the book closely mirrors experiences in a typical twelve months. This guidebook is best referred to throughout the training year but could be used as a reflective tool after a six or twelve month attachment.
This handbook will be helpful for GP registrars at all stages of their training. Non-clinical issues that are often new to the first time registrar are covered such as practice administration, contracts and salary. The contents of a medical bag, how to arrange a consulting room and prescribing are also included. More experienced registrars will benefit from the advice on paperwork, out of hours work, and medico-legal aspects of general practice. The guidance on the mental health act and arranging a section is particularly well written. Sectioning, a subject that often worries GP registrars, is made easy to understand and should prove very useful.
Exam candidates will also find the GP Registrar Survival Guide helpful. The book explains the basics of summative assessment and the MRCGP exam. There are also practical tips on videoing and audit writing. This information can be easily found from other sources but the synopsis on certificates and benefits provides good information on subjects that are poorly covered elsewhere.
The book is well written. It is concise and both easy and enjoyable to read. The whole book is cross-referenced which helps the reader to appreciate how several subjects may inter-relate. The page margins are over-sized to provide room for notes.
The handbook deserves its prize as the best specialist textbook at the recent Royal Society of Medicine Book Awards.
