Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery

Editors: G R McLatchie and D J Leaper

The Oxford handbook series is an essential aid to the junior hospital doctor and these books are designed for placing in a white coat pocket, with the vinyl cover adding to its lifespan.

For a GP this series is also very useful and this particular handbook is no exception. Although it is handbook sized and will fit in a white pocket, it contains 930 pages and covers an astonishing volume of material.

Now for the GP some of it is not always relevant to every day work but it is still interesting. Yet there is still plenty here that is highly relevant to everyday general practice and many of the subspecialties gain good practical coverage. Interestingly and thoughtfully there is even a section on management within the NHS, an original inclusion in a surgical textbook.

The detail in most of the sections of this book is just about right for the needs of the average GP, and though many of us don’t wear white coats, the compact size of the book means it can be placed in a bookshelf within the consulting room, and so is accessible. Even better, you buy this for a shade under £20 which represents excellent value for money.
