Bailey and Love’s Short Practice of Surgery
Editors: R C G Russel, Norman Williams and Christopher Bulstrode
Many students and postgraduates will be familiar with the unique style of this amazing book which first appeared in 1932. It is a beautifully produced book making it a pleasure to thumb through. It is also a super textbook providing students, GPs and surgical trainees an excellent description of surgical situations. As generations of users have come to expect, one of the book’s strong points is its illustrations, which are now in colour. There are also biographical footnotes and superb coverage and this edition remains well up to date with chapters on laparoscopic surgery and audit in surgery.
It’s coverage and scope are massive and yet is a readable book with an almost coffee table feel to it (this was the hardback edition that was reviewed) and for a GP would be an ideal single volume general surgical reference source par excellence. At the same time it is the sort of book that is pulled from the bookshelf and opened for an informative read as well as skimming through and looking at the pictures. Without doubt this book has matured over the years whilst remaining fresh and up to date.
