A Textbook of Clinical Pharmacology
Editor: Cesare Sirtori
Considering that one of our therapeutic tools is the writing of a prescription, resulting in a patient receiving a potentially potent drug, relatively little goes into us learning more about pharmacology. Sure, we are showered by literature from medical journals, reps from the pharmaceutical industry and numbers of other sources but it is good to have a solid, independent, yet accessible source in this important area. So step forwards this first edition of what is a good practical book.
It is a multi-author contribution with many of the authors coming from continental Europe. This gives a good range of expertise and within its 90 chapters and just under 1000 pages, there is a comprehensive review of the topic. I found this book ideal for a good clinical therapeutic review of a specific area and an excellent refresher read. The depth of coverage is ideal for a general practising physician or GP and clinical aspects, rather than the scientific coverage, is correctly given the main priority.
Overall this is a practical reference source which will complement a prescribing guide such as the BNF. A purchaser of this book is not going to be disappointed.
